Another Time Another Place
GROWING UP AND COMING DOWN was the first show of Philip
Pocock and Walter Dahn collaborative painting and drawing, organized by Joern
Boetnagel (now Galerie BQ Cologne) in a soon-to-be-demolished former softporn
cinema on Friesenplatz in the heart of Cologne Germany.
GROWING UP AND COMING DOWN, the title, was coined
by African-American poet, artist andi inspirator, Frederick William Ayer.
The exhibition comprised word paintings, drawings, and videos. Reading, seeing and hearing at the same time.
The painted lyrics interpreted songs by early Blues artists, Memphis Ma Raines, Blind Lemmon Jefferson, as well as concerns of
Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash,
Roy Orbison, Brian Wilson, and Will Oldham of Palace...
At intervals the exhibition space was transformed
into a cinema for screenings, a with woth works removed a word painting circumscribing the whole space was made for the finissage event.
During the show, a Xerox Bar, the middle room, served drinks and documentation, and
the back room with mattress provided a monitor for video viewing key musicological documentaries and
signed out at the gallery reception.
